Ah! So glad you are asking the question. At work we have the following to play with; Nikon D60/D300/D3 and Canon 450d/5d/1ds. I have played with the D60 and Canon 450d for a decent amount of time (probably the 450d more so since I took it on a month long London work event). My thoughts between the D60 and 450d (if of use) are below. To create perspective you must remember I am a Nikon fan, although from my thoughts you will see that I'm pretty fair.

1) The Nikon D60 is better made, the body feels more solid in the hand and the architects at work say it handles the wet better (we had to send the 450d back twice due to electrical problems in light spitting rain). The D60 took a drenching in Norway and came out shooting with no probs. The 450d got water over the sensor which is a pretty serious problem.

2) The 450d does exposure bracketing, the D60 doesn't. If you use a tipod for your HDR shots this is irrelevant. If you don't it (kinda) does. I say "(kinda)" coz for some reason the bracketing on the 450d creates a fuzziness across the 3 (or more) shots. It's not serious but I found it annoying as one in three atempts was required and you cant see on the screen if it's not right. I'm not the only one to find this, but I don't know why it is.

3) The 450d has live view. Many cameras have this and from my experience I found this useful for one thing. In a crowd you can vaguely lift the camera up high above heads and vaguely see what you are shootting. In practice this is hampered by the fact that the angle at which you are trying to see the screen (at distance and an acute angle) means that you can't really see fuck all. It's a nice function for the sales boys in Jessops but in the field I've never found it makes me want to trade in my camera. In fact it gives me a warm cheek, which is pleasant but makes looking through the view finder odd due to light balance if not turned off.

4) The 450d produces 12mp shots compared to the Nikon D60's 10mp. The architects at work say that on cheap Dslr cameras this only increases noise levels. I've never noticed any difference in practice. I blew up A2 shots from both cameras (for ad purposes) on pro printers and they looked identical.

5) The D60 has active D-lighting (something nicked from the high end Nikons). In practice this creates a better metering than on my D40, noticeably so. The colours on the 450d are bland in comparison, only the 5d (which Dave Morris has) is equal. The 450d falls apart in this respect.

6) The auto ISO on the D60 is way better, the 450d is massively limited in this respect and if you shoot in aperture/shutter priority it makes a big difference. Even on my D40 I can force the ISO up to 3200 too get better shots in weird light. You can't do that on the Canon. Even on manual.

7) The D60 does not have a AF motor in its body but the 450d does. Obviously in Nikons this limits you to retro lenses in AF/AE modes. Any Nikkor lense made after the mid 70s fits a D60 but (depending on lense) may need manual focus or aperture/shutter. For the Canon however (due to it's mount) you need a new Canon Dslr lense and they ain't cheap. The old lenses on Canons (as far as I'm aware) don't fit full stop. This means that on ebay you can't pick up an old lense for £30 quid for a Canon Dslr. On a Nikon body you can. My Nikkor 1985 50mm 1.5 portrait lense is my favourite and it cost £27 plus £5 post. Overrall this means that you can build up your lense collection easier (there's loads on ebay coz sellers know they are backwards compatible on Nikons) and cheaper since there's a million old nikon lenses out there.

6) Lastly (and this one goes to the Canon). The screen is bigger. I found that if you want to review your shots the Canon screen is slightly better due to its size but the resolution of the screen is the same as the D60 (and my D40) at 230,000 pixels.

OVERRALL: If it were me I would choose the Nikon since I've learnt that the body of any camera is only any good if you can get good, cheap lenses. I've had loads of bodies to play with but still wouldnt change my D40 coz I can get decent lenses off ebay for piss all. PLUS all Nikons have shit hot metering and amazing build quality. If anything I would get a D80 as it's cheap at the mo (compared to the D60 and 450d) coz it's likely to be replaced, but with a Nikon you will always be able to use the older lenses.

Hope that helps

P.S. If you have the money get a Canon 5D as it has full frame sensor, if you don't get a D40 (really cheap now) or a D60/D80.
